Rethink Church resource, seeker website addresses change
Nashville — Congregational resources for the Rethink Church advertising and welcoming campaign have moved to a new website address: umcom.org/rethinkchurch, though the site content remains the same. The website that previously housed congregational resources, RethinkChurch.org, will become the primary seeker site that is featured in Rethink Church advertising, beginning this fall.
“Research shows that RethinkChurch.org resonates most strongly with the seekers we are trying to reach with our denominational advertising,” said the Rev. Larry Hollon, chief executive of United Methodist Communications. “This website address reinforces the message we want non-United Methodist seekers to take away from our advertising—that we are rethinking church.”
The RethinkChurch.org seeker site will feature more site engagement capabilities and content offerings than its seeker site predecessor, 10thousanddoors.org. RethinkChurch.org visitors will be able to read, watch, comment, and interact on topics that are important both to them and to The United Methodist Church—from the environment, to global health, to disaster relief. An interactive map will connect seekers to a church in their area, based upon ministry offerings and events listed in a church’s Find-a-Church profile. (Update your Find-a-Church profile now)
Rethink Church congregational resources help churches to participate in the Rethink Church advertising and welcoming campaign. Resources include a Rethink Church overview and FAQ, church marketing tutorials, advertising samples, graphics, worship aids, and more.
About Rethink Church
Rethink Church, the next evolution of The United Methodist Church’s “Open hearts” welcoming and advertising campaign, highlights the many opportunities available within United Methodist churches to engage with the world—from literacy programs to feeding the poor. Targeting a globally minded 18- to 34-year-old audience, Rethink Church advertisements appear in traditional and new media, and direct viewers to the website RethinkChurch.org, where visitors may interact, learn more about the church, and search for involvement opportunities. Rethink Church resources are available to local congregations at umcom.org/rethinkchurch.
District Fall Vision and Funding Plan meetings schedule
You are part of a 10 million person worldwide movement group known as United Methodists. Your local church adds to the 78,000-plus right here in Nebraska to form a powerful connection of mission, risk-taking justice and ministry work. Supporting and equipping the local church is the primary role of the district and conference.
Each district will host a meeting this fall where Conference staff members will discuss detailed information about the 2011 Conference Funding Plan passed at the 2010 Annual Conference Session. At these meetings, attendees will have the opportunity to find out how Conference apportioned ministry dollars are being used to further God’s kingdom. Most importantly, we want to hear from our United Methodist members from all across the Conference.
There will be ample time for small group discussion and opportunities to ask questions. Everyone is welcome to attend and each church’s lay member, clergy member and finance chairperson is especially encouraged to attend. Please plan to attend one of the meetings in your area.
Each district meeting agenda is different, so contact your district office for specific information about your district's event.

Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON)
JFON provides free, professional legal services to immigrants in monthly clinics. Justice for Our Neighbors legal clinics are located in Grace United Methodist church Omaha and FUMC Columbus. Each of these clinics is an opportunity for local congregations to "open their doors" with a warm and hospitable welcome for newcomers in their midst. JFON in Nebraska has served clients from over 140 different nations, all of whom qualify for direct legal services under federal poverty guidelines. In the second quarter of 2010 JFON Columbus served 91 people and JFON Omaha served 396.
This story illustrates the good work JFON is doing. Eric, a lawful permanent resident, came to JFON seeking help to bring his family to the United States from Mexico. JFON helped Eric fill out his naturalization paperwork and he is now a U.S. citizen. His wife was approved to come to the United States in April of 2010 and his youngest children are in the final stages of the process. They should be reunited with their father and mother soon. JFON helped Eric cut years off of this process.
UM Mission Share dollars support the good work that JFON is doing in our conference. For more information about JFON click here: http://nebraskajfon.org/index.html.
Reason no. 303 to sign up for Wesleyan Live: It's as close as your computer ...
Another reason Wesleyan Live — a continuing education program for clergy, laity and community members — is so great? It provides a unique perspective on religion and theology, and thus appeals to people from a wide spectrum of backgrounds and interests. It’s also as close as your computer.
“We used to promote the 10 NET downlink sites and that was all that was available. Now participants can sit home in front of their own computers and take part,” Nebraska Conference communications/marketing director said. She pointed out that often people have to drive an hour or more to get to the downlink sites.
While participants can still gather at downlink locations and benefit from the group dynamic and interaction, the distance to a site is no longer a reason not to take part. The course planners are also making the online experience interactive as well by using Facebook and other tools.
The Wesleyan Live fall 2010 course "Flames on the Plains — REDUX" will be led by Dr. Ron Naugle, NWU professor emeritus of history, and the Rev. Lowen Kruse, retired United Methodist minister and former state senator. Inspired by Bishop Don W. Holter's book "Flames on the Plains, A History of United Methodism in Nebraska," this course — subtitled "Embrace history, inspire today's faith in action" — will focus on the total history of religion on the Nebraska plains and how we can interpret that history to help us in today’s ministry.
The class will meet every Tuesday from 12-1 p.m., starting Oct. 12 and concluding Nov. 16. A flier/ad is attached below; use it to spread the word!
Enrollment is $40 per person, or $20 for retired clergy or their spouse. United Methodist clergy may receive six contact hours for continuing education credit.
To register online for the fall 2010 course, click here; or, contact Steph Nelson at 402-465-2222 or e-mail snelson3@nebrwesleyan.edu.

GCFA Internal Audit gets a new name
Nashville – In 1996, General Conference approved establishment of an internal audit function for the Church. It was created to help assure the members of The United Methodist Church that the funds donated for ministry were being spent as defined by the budget of the Church and at the directions of donors or contributors. The department has been called “GCFA Internal Audit” since its inception.
By action of the General Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA) Executive Committee upon recommendation of the Audit and Review Committee, it will be renamed the Office of Internal Audit, removing the GCFA name from the title. The Office of Internal Audit will continue to be responsible for performing internal audits for all agencies (including GCFA) receiving general Church funds. It reports directly to the Audit & Review Committee.
The Audit & Review Committee consists of five GCFA board members and five other members. The Office of Internal Audit works independently and is committed to maintaining its impartiality in matters of audits. It expects the name change will help promote this work.
The Office of Internal Audit works diligently to provide internal audit functions to general agencies and other entities of the connectional United Methodist Church.

Is your church's Find-A-Church profile up-to-date?
Just a friendly reminder that if you have not updated your church's Find-A-Church profile lately, now is a great time to do so! This especially applies to those of you who find yourself serving a new church; you'll want to update the pastor information and any other new things your church is doing.
For those clergy who might not be familiar with it, Find-A-Church provides United Methodist churches with a free online profile. Churches can share not only their address, phone number and website information, but can also create a personalized snapshot of their congregation. It is a chance for churches of any size to build a positive image, present opportunities and attract newcomers, all at no charge.
Once you are on the "Find-A-Church" page, choose to update your church's information. There’s even a tutorial to walk you through the steps if you need assistance. We encourage you to input as much information as possible, including photos. Perhaps instead of using a photo of your church building, you might use one showing one of your church's ministries in action. Take into consideration what will speak to people, and make them want to visit your church. (Note: There’s a great article about photo sharing featured on the Communications UMdashboard this week!)
The Find-A-Church directory receives approximately 280,000 hits a month; by updating your church’s profile, you can reach these hundreds of thousands of people who are searching for a church home. Many churches use Find-A-Church as their primary website and others view it as an extension to their church websites and direct traffic there.
If you have questions about updating your Find-A-Church information, contact United Methodist Communications at FAC@umc.org or 800-251-8140. Click here to get started.
Spotlight on stewardship resources at The Resource Center
Director of The Resource Center for Churches Diane Dunkerson will be highlighting various stewardship resources from the center’s collection over the coming weeks.
Being a good steward doesn’t mean just managing our money well, but managing all the gifts that God has given us with a Christian heart. The six-session study “Faithful and Wise – Being a Good Steward,” encourages us to consider all our gifts; possessions, time, talents and skills, our physical environment, our spiritual environment and lastly our money and how we can use them not only to God’s glory but to share the good things we’ve been given with all of God’s children. Each video segment is only about eight minutes and they are all great for stimulating more in depth discussion. A discussion guide is included.
A second resource I would like to highlight, “Wesley and Giving,” is one that perhaps many of you have used in the past. This classic video is well worth another visit! This 25-minute DVD hosted by Bishop Kenneth Carder is divided into three parts. The first focuses on Wesley’s life and his view of wealth and money. The second part focuses on Wesley’s key philosophy of “earn all you can, save all you can, give all you can.” The third and final segment centers around the concept of, “What does it mean to give?”
Consider one or both of these stewardship videos as introductions or “appetizers” in heightening awareness in your church or Sunday school class of the principle of stewardship. E-mail Diane Dunkerson at ddunkerson@umcneb.org or call 1-800-435-6107 to learn more about the many stewardship resources available at the Resource Center.
Stewardship update Aug. 31, 2010
Nebraska Conference Mission Shares were supported by congregations at 43.24 percent of the total 2010 funding plan as of Aug. 31. This compares with 44.20 percent as of Aug. 31, 2009 and 46.68 percent as of Aug. 31, 2008. The remaining four months of 2010 are an ideal time for many churches to continue funding the various ministries across the State of Nebraska. May the Lord inspire all of us make wise use of the gifts and resources entrusted to us by God.
A new video has been prepared to help interpret the 2011 Funding Plan. It is now available on UMtube along with several other stewardship videos. There are also a number of stewardship resources available on the general agency website.
Why we give
In case you haven’t had a chance to use this stewardship resource, we’re providing it again for your use.
Attached is a promotion of giving ad/bulletin insert to support your ministry. Please feel free to print and use these in your publications or as bulletin inserts for your giving campaigns. The reverse side is left blank for you to add your information if you wish.
Thank you for supporting the connectional ministries of The United Methodist Church. If you would like more connectional giving resources, please visit www.umcgiving.org and peruse the many stories of how your United Methodist giving is making a difference around the world.

Putting Clif Christopher's Christian stewardship messages to work; newsletter available
Pastor Joan Frenzel shares how her congregation put some of Christopher’s stewardship ideas to work.
“Clif Christopher said pastors can dream bigger than their congregations, so he suggested publishing a wish list in the bulletin every Sunday to see if anything would happen,” Frenzel said.
As the Homer congregation prepares for its 125th anniversary on Sept. 26, they have posted a list and have been sprucing up the church.
Only two days after the list was posted, one of the items on the wish list was paid for (the brand new pew cushions). Following is the wish list bulletin insert that was used.
Share your ideas for successful stewardship activities by sending them to kwitte@umcneb.org.

Three recent LPI graduates spent a month in Lincoln over the summer, doing mission work and helping out around the Conference. Two of those scholars are now attending college here in Nebraska. Claudia Cervantes is enrolled at Nebraska Methodist College in Omaha, and is receiving both financial and spiritual/emotional support from churches of the Missouri River district. Said Velasquez is attending Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln and is receiving support from members of the Blue River District.
